This is a MIDI playback of an SATB a cappella setting of the traditional Irish folk song “The Parting Glass.” I have worked in the melody of Auld Lang Syne into some of the verses as well as an original melodic setting of one verse.

Song Text:

THE PARTING GLASS
Traditional Irish Parting Song

Of all the money e’er I had,
I spent it in good company,
And all the harm I have ever done,
Alas it was to none but me.
For all I’ve done for want of wit,
To mem’ry now I can’t recall,
So, fill to me the Parting Glass,
Goodnight and joy be to you all.

So, fill to me a Parting Glass,
And drink a health what e’re befalls,
And gently rise and softly call,
Goodbye and joy be to you all.

Of all the comrades that e’re I had,
They’re sorry for my goin’ away,
And all the sweethearts that e’re I had
They’d wish me one more day to stay.
But since it fell into my lot,
That I should rise and you should not,
I’ll gently rise and softly call,
Goodnight and joy be to you all.

So, fill to me a Parting Glass,
And drink a health what e’re befalls,
And gently rise and softly call,
Goodbye and joy be to you all.

If I had money enough to spend,
And leisure time to sit awhile.
There’s a lass (There’s a lad) in this town,
That sorely has my heart beguil’d.
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips
I own she has my heart in thrall,
Then fill to me the Parting Glass,
Goodnight and joy be to you all.

So, fill to me a Parting Glass,
And drink a health what e’re befalls,
And gently rise and softly call,
Goodbye and joy be to you all.

A man may drink and not be drunk,
A man may fight and not be slain,
A man may court a pretty girl
And be welcom’d back again.
But since it has so ought to be
By time to rise and time to fall
Come fill to me the Parting Glass
Goodnight and joy be to you all.

So, fill to me a Parting Glass,
And drink a health what e’re befalls,
And gently rise and softly call,
Goodbye and joy be to you all.
