A short but hopefully useful demonstration, stage by stage, on how to change a lyre string (with rather appropriate background music from my 2013 single, “Ancient Lyre Strings”!).

The strings featured in this demonstration are “Ode” lyre strings, manufactured from sugar cane – available from Luthieros:

As I will demonstrate in a future video, the timbre of sugar cane strings is a great compromise to actual, authentic unpolished gut lyre strings (these are also available from Luthieros).

Like gut, the timbre of sugar cane lyre strings is warmer & the attack is much more crisp, but unlike gut, sugar cane strings are not affected by humidity and not being as brittle as gut, are far more durable.

I will also be putting togther a video to also demonstrate the timbre of actual unpolished gut strings. The most unique characteristic of unpolished gut, is that unlike polished gut, each string is not perfectly uniform, resulting in a quirky, distinct voice for each separate string.

This effect can be heard in the background music to the present video, “Ancient Lyre Strings”, which actually featured unpolished silk lyre strings;which are strikingly similar in timbre to unpolished gut:
