Back in the 5th century BC, performers of the ancient Greek kithara were venerated as the pinnacle of ancient Greek music performance – in the 21st century, the ancient Greek kithara of classical antiquity has once again, been reborn!
The kithara was the large wooden lyre, reserved for only the professional musicans of classical Greece; when it was venerated in much the same way as the electric guitar is today, by devotees of real rock music! There were even regular ‘X Factor’ style kithara contests, where virtuosity was prized.
In this improvsiation on my replica kithara, I attempt to demonstrate, how even although I am not a trained singer, it is perfect for accompanying any vocal line, with it’s guitar-like deep strums and rich timbre. Indeed, we actually derive our word ‘guitar’ from the original ancient Greek word, ‘kithara’!
