While watching a presentation on impressionistic art the presenter described the development of the artwork as “colors in time”. This is what I tried to do in this first of three short piano works. My desire to convey a wide range of sensations inspired me to explore the endless tone qualities of the piano and harmonies depicting light in its changing qualities.

I was influenced by the “color poems” of Ravel’s piano works (Gaspard de la Nuit, Miroirs) with their ever- changing textures, harmonies and time signatures. I made use of some polytonal techniques but always had a tonal focus on the melody. My arpeggiated figures are derived more from Liszt but with a more delicate flavor.
