This piece is inspired by a creature from Norse mythology called the Fylgja. The Fylgja is a spirit in animal form, that was thought to accompany a person in connection to their fate. Although this is in many ways ominous, the Fylgja was often characterized as being a guide rather than a condemner. In other renditions of the myth, the Fylgja is portrayed as a woman, and is associated with guardianship.
